About Poway California
Poway is a city in San Diego County, California. The population was 48,421 at the 2020 census. Poway’s rural roots gave rise to its slogan “The City in the Country”. As of the 2020 census, Poway was the 185th largest city in California by land area.
Poway is located at (32.9622, -117.0265) and sits on a plateau above the northern shore of Lake Poway in central San Diego County at an elevation of 1,325 feet (404 m). The city has a total area of 39 square miles (100 km2), all land.
The original inhabitants of Poway’s region were the Kumeyaay people. These Native American people traditionally lived in small villages, some as small as 30 to 50 people. Built up over time, each village consisted of a group of several family compounds surrounded by open space used for hunting and gathering.
The first European settlers arrived in the early 19th century. A group of Mormon pioneers settled near the present site of Old poway Park on March 2, 1848. Led by Isaac D. Bloxham, they named the area for their leader, Brigham Young. The pioneers abandoned the area less than a year later after suffering from crop failures.
Poway’s contemporary history began in 1887 when Ephraim Morse purchased nearly 1,000 acres (400 ha) of land at $175 per acre ($430/km2) in today’s Midland area. In 1912, John Forester bought 563 acres (228 ha) east of Espola Road and north of Highway 67 including what is now Lake Poway. Through the 1930s and 1940s much of what is now Old Towne was developed, including schools, churches, and homes.
Poway incorporated on December 1, 1980. The city has grown ten-fold since incorporation, largely due to development pressures from neighboring communities and the construction of Interstate 15 through northern Poway.
Poway’s topography made it a logical location for the construction of a reservoir which was completed in the early 1960s. Lake Poway supplies water to much of northern San Diego County via the Second District of the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power.
Today, Poway is home to over 48,000 residents and is known for its quiet suburban atmosphere and strong sense of community. The city offers residents a variety of parks and recreation opportunities, as well as a thriving business community. In recent years, Poway has been ranked as one of the safest cities in the nation.
Poway is served by the Poway Unified School District. The district has 18 elementary schools, 6 middle schools, 4 high schools and 2 alternative schools.
Poway is home to two private high schools: Midland School, a college preparatory boarding school, and Mount Carmel High School, a Catholic school.
